How to get involved
Fundraising:
Donations are the lifeblood of the Community Chest and ensure we are able to keep supporting beneficiaries delivering essential social welfare services to the poor, vulnerable and marginalised.
Employee giving:
The Give-As-You-Earn programme is community philanthropy in action, where the contributions help to improve the circumstances in communities where the donors have grown up or where they live and work. The programme, which began in 1935, is today supported by approximately 70 000 workers and employers in the Western Cape raises some R2 million per annum for social welfare. Contributions range from R5 to R50 a month and are collected directly through a company’s payroll administration system or direct debit orders.

Corporate partnerships:
It is no longer enough for companies to pay lip-service to social investment government requires it and customers expect it. Increasingly a reputation for good corporate responsibility programme equates to good business.
The Community Chest typically works with companies in two ways: as an adviser to help structure an effective social investment programme and as a delivery partner to ensure donations and other forms of help are delivered where they are most needed. The two roles aren’t mutually exclusive and we can implement and monitor programmes that we’ve helped develop or existing corporate investment initiatives. When advising on social investment we ensure the programme is appropriate to the company, that it delivers on business objectives and helps build employee and community relations.
In evaluating delivery we apply the same standards and methods as we use with our own beneficiaries. Besides providing expertise, the Community Chest is a credible partner which meets both procurement and empowerment requirements. Corporate support can include monetary contributions, in-kind donations, the provision of expertise or services or the help of volunteers.

Individual donations:
Much of the Community Chest’s success can be attributed to the ongoing support, passion and commitment of individuals. You can contribute to our work by making a regular donation, annually, quarterly or monthly. By making an individual donation you will help over 400 organisations delivering social development in the Western Cape. You can also specify if you’d like your donation to be used for a particular cause, such as child and family welfare, care of the elderly or any of the other sectors where we operate. Or you can choose to simply support the Community Chest, so we can continue our work. There are also plenty of other ways you can help. These can range from donating clothes or useful items such as baby prams or toys that you no longer need to volunteer your time and skills.

Special events and competitions:
We create diverse opportunities for communities and businesses to support community development through our special events. You can support the Community Chest by entering our competitions or participating in our special events. We run two competitions as well as host a number of special events. The most well-known of these are the annual Community Chest Carnival, which happens early in the year and the Twilight Team Run, which takes place near the end of the year.
